Walter Grimes Fortune, 76, of Corrigan, passed away on March 18, 2024 in Conroe. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 22, 2024 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at First Baptist Church Corrigan. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 23, 2024 at 2:00 PM also at First Baptist Church Corrigan, with Rev. Buster Grigg officiating and Rev. Gary Forrest providing special music. Interment will follow at Union Springs Cemetery in Corrigan.
Grimes was born in Camden, TX to W.S. and Nona Lee Antley Fortune. He met his future bride, Jackie, while attending high school together and they were united in marriage on June 3, 1966 in Corrigan, enjoying 57 wonderful years together. At his very core, Grimes had a servant’s heart which he exercised frequently. His faith and his giving spirit allowed him to serve his God and his church in numerous ways including being a Deacon at First Baptist Church Diboll, a Deacon at Damascus Missionary Baptist Church, and also at First Baptist Church Corrigan, where he served as the Building & Grounds Chairman for 12 years. Even though his main employment came from TxDot as a chief accountant for 30 years, he found many and various ways to serve his community and those around him. He served as President and a coach for Corrigan Youth Baseball for 8 years. He served as a member of the Lions Club for 10 years. He served on the Corrigan-Camden ISD School Board for 17 years and on the Polk County Appraisal Board of Directors for 4 years. He was the Mayor of his beloved town of Corrigan for 8 years and he was employed as the City Manager for 1 year, and for 2 years he served on the Economic Development Committee for the City of Corrigan. Other committee’s Grimes sat on include the following: Polk County Industrial Development Committee for 6 years, the TxDot I-69 Corridor Segment Committee and the Trinity-Neches Sub Regional Planning Committee. Some of his favorite things came from the simple things, even just picking up litter from around town because he took great pride in his town. He did not do these things for accolades or pats on the back, it was from his heart, and for doing so he was awarded the Mason’s Community Builders award in June 2009.
He is survived by his wife Jackie Fortune of Corrigan; by his son, Walter L. Fortune, and his wife, Bernadette, of Lake Jackson, TX; by daughter, Tracy Cobb, and her husband, Mike, also of Corrigan.
He is also survived by 2 grandchildren: John Fortune and Chris Cobb and his wife, Lexie. As well as a host of friends and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents: W.S. & Nona Lee Fortune.
Pallbearers will include: Ryan Burris, Nathan McKay, Mason Moody, Don Sciba, Joel Seago and Shawn Smith. Honorary pallbearers will include: Phil Broxson, Larry Burris, Randy Hendry, Darrian Hudman, Anthony Page, David Ray and David Reed.
